PAN International Supports Global Call for Plant-Rich Diets at COP30
A global coalition of NGOs, cities, and regional authorities is calling on world leaders to take urgent action on food system transformation, beginning with a coordinated shift toward plant-rich diets.
The Bélem Declaration on Plant-Rich Diets, launched this week at the UN climate change conference in Bonn, urges UN member states to prioritise healthy, sustainable, plant-based food policies as a core climate strategy.

Coordinated by ProVeg International, the Declaration outlines a clear roadmap for action, including:
The development of National Action Plans for Plant-Based Foods.
A deadline for these plans to be ready for discussion at COP32 in 2027.
Financial support for implementation through agrifood promotion budgets.
Endorsed by a growing number of global stakeholders, the Declaration is backed by UN scientific findings and highlights the far-reaching benefits of plant-rich diets. These include improved public health, stronger food and economic security, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
“Food is a powerful lever for change,” says Nanine Wyma, Managing Director of PAN International. “We fully support the Bélem Declaration’s call for plant-rich diets to be prioritised in climate policy. This is a vital opportunity to improve public health, protect ecosystems, and promote equity through nutrition.”
The Declaration also recognises the importance of regional context. It seeks to preserve the plant-forward culinary heritage of the Global South while addressing the overconsumption of animal products in the Global North.
At PAN International, we believe that food system transformation is essential for meeting global climate and health targets. We stand with ProVeg and partners across the world in urging national governments to take bold, science-based action and ensure food is prioritised at COP30.
