PAN International Publishes New White Paper on Nutrition Support in GLP-1 Care
PAN International has published a new white paper exploring why practical, evidence-informed nutrition support should be integrated throughout the GLP-1 treatment journey.
PAN’s white paper, Beyond the Prescription: Why Nutrition Support is Essential Across the GLP-1 Treatment Journey, highlights the need for credible, practical nutrition education and support alongside GLP-1-based therapies.
“GLP-1 medicines are changing obesity and metabolic health care, but medication alone is not the full picture, said Sumati Bajaj, co-author of the white paper and Nutrition Knowledge Specialist at PAN. “As appetite, food intake and nutritional needs change during treatment, patients may need support to maintain dietary quality, nutritional adequacy, muscle and bone health, treatment tolerance and long-term wellbeing.”
PAN’s position is not to challenge the existence, prescription or promise of GLP-1-based therapies. Rather, the white paper makes the case that nutrition support should be recognised as an essential component of safe, effective and patient-centred GLP-1 care.
The paper explores current evidence on nutritional risks and gaps in GLP-1 care, including inadequate nutrient intake, loss of lean mass, gastrointestinal symptoms, bone health considerations and weight management after treatment discontinuation. It also outlines practical priorities for healthcare professionals, patients and health systems, while recognising that more research is needed on the most effective models for delivering nutrition support.
A key message from the paper is clear: eating less is not the same as eating well. There is no single “GLP-1 diet”, but patients should have access to nutrition guidance that is practical, culturally appropriate, evidence-informed and adapted to their individual needs.
