Job Post: Junior Design Intern

Reports to: Communications Manager

Location: South Africa or the Czech Republic

Employment: 12-month contract

About the Role

PAN International is a global medical non-profit organisation that advances nutrition in healthcare and medical education to reduce the number of diet-related deaths by promoting evidence-based healthy diets for personal and planetary health.

As we continue to expand our impact, we are looking for a dynamic and passionate Junior Design Intern to support our growing communications team with visual design assets and creative collateral. This role is ideal for a new graduate who is eager to apply their design skills and gain work experience at a global non-profit organisation.

The ideal candidate has a background in creative design, digital media and/or social media, and a strong visual eye with a passion for turning complex ideas into clear, engaging content. You will help bring PAN’s work to life across digital channels by designing graphics, templates, and visual content that speak to our core audience of healthcare professionals and medical students.

You will work closely with the Communications Manager and wider team to:

  • Learn about health communications

  • Strengthen PAN’s visual identity across platforms

  • Support key campaigns and events with high-quality visual assets

  • Help grow reach and engagement across all digital channels, including social media, our community platform PANCO, our website and newsletters

Key Responsibilities

Graphic Design

  • Design branded visual assets and content for PAN’s website, community platform (PANCO), newsletters, webinars, and events, including banners and presentation slides.

  • Support social media content with static posts, carousels, stories, and simple reels covers, based on PAN’s brand guidelines.

  • Support the development of infographics and visual summaries that translate scientific concepts into clear, accessible graphics for healthcare audiences.

  • Prepare artwork for reports, factsheets, and simple print materials (for example, one-pagers, posters, or event materials).

  • Develop and adapt content for PAN’s channels in line with content plans and campaign briefs.

  • Maintain and evolve a library of branded templates (for social posts, presentations, reports, etc.) to help the team work efficiently and consistently.

  • Prepare platform-ready assets, including alt text, correct dimensions, and optimised formats for PAN’s website and PANCO.

Teamwork and Workflows

  • Work from existing brand guidelines and help refine them through consistent application and small improvements.

  • Work closely with the Communications Manager and other team members, including PAN’s regional and national offices, to align visuals with key messages.

  • Organise design files and assets clearly so they can be reused by the wider team.

  • Stay updated on basic design and social media trends that are relevant and appropriate for PAN’s audiences.

Key Requirements

  • Experience & Qualifications

    • A design-related qualification, for example a 1-year diploma, higher certificate, or recognised online course, and a strong portfolio showing at least 1 year of practical experience in graphic design and content creation.

    • Proficiency in professional design tools (for example, Canva, Illustrator and/or InDesign).

    • Experience designing for social media and websites (Squarespace a plus but not essential), including knowledge of aspect ratios, safe zones, and platform requirements.

    • Experience with remote working or in a distributed team environment is an advantage.

    • Experience with healthcare, science, or environmental / sustainability content is a plus but not essential.

  • Skills

    • Ability to work from brand guidelines and create consistent, clean, professional designs.

    • Strong visual storytelling skills, including the ability to simplify information-rich content into clear graphics, carousels, and basic infographics.

    • Good written and visual communication skills in English.

    • Strong attention to detail in layout, typography, and hierarchy.

    • Ability to manage time, prioritise tasks, and deliver to deadlines across multiple projects.

    • Comfortable using AI tools to support and streamline work, for example to:

      • Draft or refine copy and post ideas

      • Generate visual concepts or references

      • Organise workflows, checklists, and content plans

    • Natural curiosity about AI and digital tools, and an interest in experimenting with them to optimise workflows and improve quality over time.

Note: you do not need to tick every box. We are looking for a solid design foundation and a willingness to learn and grow in the role.

  • Personal Attributes

    • Curious, creative, and willing to learn about nutrition, healthcare, and planetary health.

    • Passion for global health and improving the health of people around the world is a plus.

    • Works well with others and is open to feedback, happy to rework and improve designs as needed.

    • Proactive and solutions-focused, able to suggest ideas and improvements rather than waiting for perfect briefs.

    • Organised and reliable, with a strong sense of responsibility for delivering high-quality work.

    • Eager to learn, open to guidance, and comfortable asking questions as you grow into the role.
