About this event

Part 1: “Effects of Time-Restricted Eating on Health” with Emily Manoogian, Ph.D.

In the first presentation of the evening, Emily Manoogian, Ph.D will give us an overview of the current research around time-restricted eating and shares her insights into the powerful effects of this method.

Emily Manoogian and her team at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies are world leaders in the field of science known as ‘chronobiology’. They investigate how the timing of our meals affects our health.

Circadian rhythms optimize nutrient homeostasis by orchestrating daily rhythms in catabolic and anabolic metabolism to the appropriate time of the 24-hour day. Chronic circadian rhythm disruption predisposes individuals to metabolic diseases including T2DM and obesity.

Conversely, maintaining a daily rhythm of feeding and fasting sustains robust circadian rhythms in metabolism. This talk will discuss pre-clinical animal models that demonstrate Time-Restricted Feeding (TRF) is both a preventative and therapeutic treatment for metabolic diseases and how human trials of time-restricted eating (TRE) can improve cardiometabolic health.

Part 2: “Effects of Nutrition on the Gut Microbiome and Metabolic Health” with Emanuel Canfora, Ph.D.

Evidence is accumulating that the gut microbiome is involved in the aetiology of obesity and obesity-related complications such as type 2 diabetes mellitus. The gut microbiota is able to ferment indigestible foods, thereby yielding important metabolites that can influence the host metabolism.

In this webinar, we discuss the influence of diet on the gut microbiome and its implications for metabolic health. A specific focus will be on microbial metabolites derived from the fermentation of indigestible carbohydrates and proteins as well as how these metabolites can affect the progression of metabolic diseases. The talk will conclude with a look at future aspects that need to be considered in this emerging research field including personalised nutritional approaches.

About the series

“A Taste of Healthcare” webinar series covers the links between nutrition and some of our most pressing global health threats. We are extremely happy to welcome a selection of leading international researchers in their fields to share their knowledge with you during the series. The series provides medical students with the knowledge, motivation, and tools to implement optimal nutrition in clinical practice and healthcare systems.

There are a total of five 90-minute webinars in this series with one or two speakers per event, plus a Q&A / discussion session afterwards. Please register in advance for each individual event by clicking on the register buttons on each event registration page. Please note that you will be redirected to Zoom to complete your registration. Registration for all events in the series is also possible. Please only register for all events if you intend to participate in all of them as spaces are limited.

Speakers

Emily Manoogian, Ph.D.

Emily Manoogian, Ph.D. is a staff scientist at the Salk Institute who studies the intricate interaction between our body’s biological rhythms and the timing of our daily habits. These internal rhythms interact with our behaviours including when and how much we sleep, eat, and exercise. As the head of human research in Dr. Satchin Panda’s lab at Salk, Emily investigates how the timing of these behaviours relate to health.

Emanuel Canfora, Ph.D.

Emanuel Canfora, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor at the Maastricht University Medical Center+, The Netherlands. His current position involves teaching, basic and applied science, as well as project management. Dr. Canfora’s current research focuses on strategies to alter the human gut microbiome to prevent and treat chronic metabolic disease. To study this he combines in vivo human intervention studies, with a range of in vitro experiments using human cell lines and in vitro models of the human colon. His work has been recognized with several prestigious international awards and grants.

About PAN University Groups

This PAN webinar series is organised in cooperation with PAN University Groups, a project from the Physicians Association for Nutrition. This international community of medical students organises numerous activities and educational events on a local, national and international level to make nutrition a central part of every medical students’ education and professional toolkit. If you’re a medical student motivated to learn more about nutrition and how you can implement this valuable knowledge into effective patient care, then come along and find out more. At the end of each event in the Q&A session, we will give you more information about how you can get involved with PAN University Groups.
